Salaam Y’all and Howdy Fam!
Today, I wanted to delve into a topic that holds immense importance in the life of every Muslim: the pursuit of knowledge. Islam places great emphasis on seeking knowledge as a means of understanding the world around us, deepening our faith, and benefiting ourselves and others. Let us explore the significance of seeking knowledge and how it shapes our spiritual journey.
Divine Command:
Allah has commanded us to seek knowledge in numerous verses of the Quran.
- In Surah Al-Mujadila (58:11), Allah says, “Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees.” This verse highlights the elevated status bestowed upon those who seek knowledge and apply it in their lives.
- Surah Al-Isra (17:36):”And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight, and the heart – about all those [one] will be questioned.”
- Surah Al-Zumar (39:9):”Are those who know equal to those who do not know? Only they will remember [who are] people of understanding.”
- Surah Al-Baqarah (2:269):”He gives wisdom to whom He wills, and whoever has been given wisdom has certainly been given much good. And none will remember except those of understanding.”
- The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:”Whoever treads a path in search of knowledge, Allah will make easy for him the path to Paradise.” (Sahih Muslim)
- The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:”Seeking knowledge is obligatory upon every Muslim.” (Sunan Ibn Majah)
- The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:”The scholars are the inheritors of the prophets. The prophets did not leave behind a dinar or dirham, but they left behind knowledge. Whoever takes hold of it has taken hold of an abundant portion.” (Sunan Abu Dawood)
- The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:”Whoever follows a path in the pursuit of knowledge, Allah will make a path to Paradise easy for him.” (Sahih Bukhari)
It is abundantly clear the status and the benefits of seeking knowledge. The one who seeks and gains Islamic knowledge is greater than those who don’t but are still Muslim is greater than them like the size and grandeur of the Moon is greater than the stars.
Acquire Knowledge Locally:
- Islam encourages us to acquire knowledge wherever we are, utilizing the resources available in our communities. It is not necessary to travel great distances in search of knowledge. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “Seeking knowledge is obligatory upon every Muslim” (Sunan Ibn Majah). He didn’t say seek knowledge in Saudi Arabia or in Egypt. We should prioritize seeking knowledge within our immediate surroundings, attending local classes, engaging with knowledgeable individuals, and utilizing online resources.
Overcoming Obstacles:
- While seeking knowledge locally is important, it is equally essential not to let any obstacles hinder our quest for knowledge. Be it language barriers, financial constraints, or limited access to resources, we must persevere and find alternative means to acquire knowledge. Online courses, books, podcasts, and educational platforms offer a wealth of information that can be accessed from the comfort of our homes.
Continuous Learning:
- Knowledge is not limited to a specific time or age; it is a lifelong journey. The Quran reminds us in Surah Al-Qamar (54:17), “And We have certainly made the Qur’an easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember?” As Muslims, we must continually seek knowledge, deepen our understanding of the Quran and Hadith, and explore various branches of Islamic knowledge.
In conclusion, dear readers, seeking knowledge is not only a religious duty but also a means of personal and spiritual growth. By embracing the command to seek knowledge, we equip ourselves to better navigate life’s challenges, understand our faith, and contribute positively to society. Let us remember the words of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him): “Seeking knowledge is a duty upon every Muslim.” May Allah bless us all on this beautiful journey of seeking knowledge.
